Antioxidants. You’ve probably heard they’re good for you so you try to eat more of them. But just what exactly are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are natural chemicals, such as vitamins, minerals, or other nutrients that can donate electrons to counteract free radicals. Antioxidants fight against oxidation, which is what occurs when oxygen interacts with any sort of cell. Think of an apple’s flesh beginning to brown after being cut and left out; this is an occurrence of oxidation. Oxidation is a natural process and necessary in maintaining a healthy body, though there are times when oxidation can destroy or damage cells. These damaged cells are what we call, free radicals. These guys have an odd number of electrons and hunt other electrons from healthy atoms in the body in order to stabilize themselves. This process injures cells, damages DNA, and opens up the body to diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and many more.
While our bodies can naturally fight off normal amounts of free radical formations, fueling our bodies with a diet of antioxidant-rich foods like this Superfood Boost Antioxidant Acai Bowl helps keep our immune systems healthy and balanced. Read on for the full recipe below!
